Frequently Asked Questions

How many business days are between two dates?

To count business days between two dates, enter the start date and end date in the Business Days Calculator above and click Count Business Days. The calculator counts all Monday–Friday days in the range, excluding weekends and US federal holidays. The start date is not counted; the end date is included.

What is a business day?

A business day is any day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday. In the United States, business days are Monday through Friday, excluding the 10 US federal holidays: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

How do I calculate business days from today?

Use the Business Days Calculator: click the calendar icon to set the start date to today, enter the number of business days to add in Add Business Days mode, and the calculator instantly shows the resulting date. Weekends and US federal holidays are automatically skipped.

What date is 10 business days from today?

Switch to Add Business Days mode, set the start date to today, enter 10 in the business days field, and the calculator shows the exact date 10 business days from now — skipping weekends and US federal holidays automatically.

How many business days are in a year?

A typical year has approximately 252 business days. This is 365 calendar days minus 104 weekend days (52 Saturdays + 52 Sundays) minus 9–10 federal holidays that fall on weekdays. The exact count varies by year depending on which holidays fall on weekends.

Which US federal holidays are excluded from the business day count?

The calculator excludes all 10 US federal holidays: New Year's Day (Jan 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (3rd Monday of January), Presidents' Day (3rd Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (1st Monday of September), Columbus Day (2nd Monday of October), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday of November), and Christmas Day (Dec 25).

Does the start date count as a business day?

No. The business day count starts from the day after the start date. This follows standard legal and financial conventions — for example, if you receive a contract on Monday and have 5 business days to respond, the first business day is Tuesday, and the deadline is the following Monday.

Can I calculate business days without excluding holidays?

Yes. Toggle off the 'Exclude US Federal Holidays' switch to count only non-weekend days, without excluding any holidays. This is useful when your organization does not observe all federal holidays, or when you want the raw weekday count.

What Are Business Days?

A business day(also called a workday or working day) is any day that is not a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) and not a public holiday. In the United States, the standard business week runs Monday through Friday. When contracts, shipping estimates, payment terms, or legal notices specify a number of "business days," weekends and US federal holidays are excluded from the count. This calculator counts business days between two dates, or finds the date that is a given number of business days after a start date.

US Federal Holidays

The US has 10 federal public holidays. Four fall on fixed calendar dates each year; six are observed on a specific weekday (e.g., the third Monday of January). When a fixed holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday — though this calculator uses the actual calendar date rather than the observed date.

How to Count Business Days Between Two Dates

To manually count business days between a start date and an end date, advance one day at a time from the day after the start date through the end date, skipping Saturdays, Sundays, and any federal holidays that fall within the range. The start date itself is not counted — only the days after it up to and including the end date.

  1. Select Count Business Days mode at the top of the calculator
  2. Enter your Start Date (the start day is excluded from the count)
  3. Enter your End Date (this day is included in the count)
  4. Toggle whether to Exclude US Federal Holidays
  5. The result shows business days, total calendar days, weekend days, and holidays

Example: From Monday January 5, 2026 to Friday January 9, 2026 — the start date (Mon Jan 5) is excluded, so the counted days are Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri = 4 business days.

How to Add Business Days to a Date

Adding business days to a date means advancing forward, counting only Monday–Friday non-holiday days. This is useful when a contract gives you "5 business days to respond" or a shipment arrives "in 3–5 business days."

  1. Select Add Business Days mode
  2. Enter the Start Date
  3. Enter the number of business days to add
  4. Toggle whether to exclude US federal holidays
  5. The result shows the exact end date with the day of the week

Example: Adding 5 business days to Friday January 9, 2026 — the next business day is Monday Jan 12, counting Mon through Fri gives Friday January 16, 2026 as the result.

Business Days in a Year

Note: The exact count depends on which federal holidays fall on weekdays vs. weekends in each specific year.
