Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
To calculate the age difference, subtract the older person's birth date from the younger person's birth date. The result expressed in years, months, and days gives the exact gap. Our calculator does this automatically — enter both birthdays and you get the difference instantly.
How many days apart are two birthdays?
Convert both dates to a Unix timestamp (milliseconds since January 1, 1970), subtract the earlier from the later, then divide by 86,400,000 (milliseconds per day). Round to the nearest integer to account for daylight-saving transitions. Our calculator shows this total-days figure alongside the years, months, and days breakdown.
What is the most common age gap between couples?
According to demographic data, the most common age gap between married couples in the United States is 2–3 years. About 8% of couples have a gap of more than 10 years, and roughly 1% have a gap exceeding 20 years.
How do you calculate age difference in years, months, and days?
Start with the day components: subtract the older birth day from the younger birth day (borrow from months if negative). Then subtract months (borrow from years if negative). Finally subtract years. The three remaining numbers are the difference in years, months, and days.
Can two people born on the same day have an age difference?
No — two people born on the exact same calendar date have a zero age difference. The calculator will show 0 years, 0 months, 0 days and indicate both birthdays fall on the same date.
How many weeks apart are two birthdays?
Divide the total number of days between the two birthdays by 7 and round down (floor). For example, a gap of 365 days equals 52 complete weeks. Our calculator shows this total-weeks figure automatically.
Who is older if Person 1 was born in 1985 and Person 2 in 1990?
Person 1 is older. Born in 1985, they are approximately 5 years older than someone born in 1990. Enter the exact birth dates into the calculator to get the precise gap in years, months, days, total days, and total weeks.
Does a leap year affect age difference calculations?
Leap years add one extra day every four years. When calculating total days between birthdays, the leap-year days are automatically included because the calculation works in milliseconds. The years-months-days breakdown uses calendar arithmetic which inherently handles leap years correctly.
How to Calculate Age Difference
How to Calculate Age Difference
Calculating the age gap between two people involves more than a simple subtraction. Because months have different lengths and leap years add extra days, you need a step-by-step approach to get an exact result in years, months, and days.
Step 1 — Identify the Older and Younger Person
Compare the two birth dates. The earlier date belongs to the older person. This determines the direction of the subtraction: we always subtract the older date from the younger date so that all components are non-negative.
Step 2 — Subtract the Day Components
Subtract the older person's birth day from the younger person's birth day. If the result is negative, borrow from the month component: add the number of days in the previous calendar month and decrease the month count by 1.
Step 3 — Subtract the Month Components
After any borrow from Step 2, subtract the months. If the result is negative, add 12 and decrease the year count by 1.
Step 4 — Subtract the Year Components
The remaining year difference is the number of complete years between the two birthdays.
Step 5 — Compute Total Days and Weeks
For total days, subtract the older timestamp from the younger timestamp in milliseconds and divide by 86,400,000 (ms per day), rounding to the nearest integer. Dividing total days by 7 and flooring gives total complete weeks.
Worked Example
Person A was born on March 15, 1985 and Person B on September 28, 1990.
- Days: 28 − 15 = 13 days
- Months: 9 − 3 = 6 months
- Years: 1990 − 1985 = 5 years
- Result: 5 years, 6 months, 13 days
- Total days: approximately 2,023 days (≈ 289 weeks)
Fun Facts About Age Gaps
How Common Are Large Age Gaps?
Among married couples in the United States, the most common age gap is 2–3 years, with the older partner typically being the husband. Gaps of more than 10 years are present in about 8% of couples. Gaps greater than 20 years account for roughly 1% of partnerships.
The Twin Exception
Twins are the clearest example of a near-zero age gap, but even twins can technically be born on different calendar dates if the birth spans midnight. The shortest possible age gap between non-twin siblings born in different years is just a matter of days, when one is born very late in December and the next very early the following January (though human gestation makes sub-9-month gaps extremely rare).
Age Gap and Shared Life Milestones
| Age Gap | Shared Decades Alive | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 years | Near identical | Likely same generation and cultural references |
| 3–5 years | Mostly overlapping | Minor differences in formative pop-culture |
| 6–10 years | Significant overlap | Different school cohorts, some generational shift |
| 11–20 years | Partial overlap | Clear generational gap in technology exposure |
| 20+ years | Limited overlap | Likely different generations entirely |
Celebrity Age Gaps
Age differences frequently make headlines in pop culture. Notable historical figures with large age gaps include Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (25 years), and many royal marriages throughout history involved gaps of 10–30 years. In sibling contexts, many families have children born 10 or more years apart.
The "10,000-Day" Milestone
People often celebrate unique day milestones. If two friends have a gap of exactly 10,000 days, one will celebrate their 10,000-day birthday roughly 27 years and 4 months before the other. Sharing milestone day celebrations is a popular modern tradition among close friends and couples.
